Sailing occupies a unique position in the world of luxury sport. Unlike Formula 1 or polo, the ocean is a genuinely democratic arena — skill, seamanship and experience matter as much as the quality of the equipment. Yet at the highest levels, the world’s most prestigious regattas attract the same cast of billionaires, royalty and celebrities that populate the luxury world’s most exclusive events.

The America’s Cup

The oldest international sporting trophy in the world, the America’s Cup has been contested since 1851. The modern event — featuring foiling monohulls that fly above the water at speeds exceeding 50 knots — is one of the most technologically sophisticated sporting competitions ever devised.

Syndicates competing for the Cup spend $100–$200 million on design, construction and campaign costs. The host city for the America’s Cup becomes, temporarily, the most glamorous sailing destination on earth.

The Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race

Held annually on 26 December, the Sydney Hobart is considered one of the world’s three great ocean races. The 628-nautical-mile course from Sydney Harbour to Hobart, Tasmania, passes through the notoriously challenging Bass Strait. The race attracts around 100 yachts ranging from grand prix racing machines to blue-water cruisers.

The Rolex Fastnet Race

Held every two years, the Fastnet Race runs from Cowes on the Isle of Wight, around the Fastnet Rock off the southwest coast of Ireland, and finishes in Plymouth. With around 350 boats, it is one of the largest offshore yacht races in the world and tests crews over 695 nautical miles of Atlantic sailing.

Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez

The most glamorous regatta in the world. Held each October in Saint-Tropez, Les Voiles attracts a magnificent fleet of classic yachts, modern racing boats and spectacular superyacht racers. The social programme — lunches aboard superyachts, dinners at the Sénéquier café, parties at the Château de la Messardière — is as legendary as the racing.

Palma Superyacht Cup

Held annually in Mallorca, the Palma Superyacht Cup is the premier racing event for superyachts. Vessels exceeding 24 metres compete in a series of inshore races in the waters off Palma de Mallorca. The event attracts some of the world’s finest sailing yachts and provides spectacular spectator racing.

How to Participate

For those wishing to experience regatta sailing without owning a yacht, numerous charter companies offer berths aboard competing vessels. Racing aboard a Maxi yacht in the Fastnet Race or a classic yacht at Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez costs €5,000–€20,000 per berth, depending on the vessel and event.
