The world’s finest gemstones represent the ultimate convergence of natural rarity, geological time and human artistry. For the serious collector, exceptional diamonds, coloured gemstones and signed jewellery from the world’s greatest houses offer a combination of aesthetic pleasure, portable wealth and long-term value appreciation that few other asset classes can provide.

The Diamond Market

The diamond market is defined by the four Cs — cut, colour, clarity and carat weight — but at the investment grade level, a fifth factor dominates all others: provenance. A diamond with a documented history of ownership by a royal family, a celebrated collector or a major auction house carries a premium that can multiply its value many times over.

The most valuable diamonds in the world are those that combine exceptional size with extraordinary colour. The Hope Diamond — a 45.52-carat deep blue stone now housed in the Smithsonian Institution — is considered priceless. The Pink Star — a 59.60-carat oval pink diamond — achieved $71.2 million at Sotheby’s Hong Kong in 2017, the highest price ever paid for a diamond at auction.

Coloured Diamonds

Among investment-grade diamonds, coloured stones command the highest premiums per carat. Natural pink, blue and red diamonds are the rarest of all — their colour caused by structural anomalies in the crystal lattice rather than chemical impurities, making them essentially impossible to replicate artificially.

The Graff Pink — a 24.78-carat fancy intense pink diamond — achieved $46.2 million at Sotheby’s Geneva in 2010. The Blue Moon of Josephine — a 12.03-carat fancy vivid blue diamond — achieved $48.4 million at Sotheby’s Geneva in 2015, setting a world record price per carat of $4.02 million.

Coloured Gemstones

Beyond diamonds, a small number of coloured gemstones have established themselves as serious investment assets — their value driven by the same combination of rarity, quality and provenance that defines the diamond market.

Burma Ruby
Pigeon blood rubies from the Mogok Valley in Burma represent the pinnacle of the coloured gemstone market. The combination of the stone’s intense red colour, exceptional transparency and Burmese origin — which has been restricted by international sanctions — creates a scarcity that drives prices to extraordinary levels. A fine Burmese ruby of five carats or more with no heat treatment can achieve $1,000,000 per carat at auction.

Kashmir Sapphire
Kashmir sapphires — mined in a remote valley in the Himalayas between 1881 and approximately 1930 — are among the rarest gemstones in the world. The mines are now essentially exhausted, making every existing Kashmir sapphire a finite resource. Fine examples achieve $200,000 to $300,000 per carat at the major auction houses.

Colombian Emerald
The finest emeralds in the world come from the Muzo and Chivor mines of Colombia. An exceptional Colombian emerald — with intense green colour, good transparency and no oil treatment — can achieve $50,000 to $100,000 per carat depending on size and quality.

Signed Jewellery

Beyond unmounted gemstones, signed jewellery from the world’s greatest houses commands extraordinary premiums at auction. A Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels or Bulgari piece with documented provenance — particularly if it was created for a specific client or occasion — achieves multiples of the value of its component gemstones and precious metals.

The most celebrated pieces of signed jewellery in the world — the Wallis Simpson Cartier panther bracelet, the Taylor-Burton Diamond, the Elizabeth Taylor Bulgari emerald suite — have achieved prices that reflect their cultural significance as much as their intrinsic value.

Building a Gemstone Collection

For the serious collector approaching the gemstone market for the first time, the following principles apply: buy the finest quality you can afford rather than quantity; prioritise provenance and documentation; work exclusively with established auction houses and certified dealers; obtain independent gemological certification from GIA or Gübelin for every significant purchase.
